Hello ESW-IIT Members,

We are looking into starting a new project his spring semester!

Design and Building a Worm Compost for UFarmIIT

The objective of this project is to design and build a container for worm composting for UFarmIIT. UFarmIIT (IPRO 314) is an urban garden that is located on the IIT Greek Quad. Worm Composting (Vermicompost) is the process of composting using various worms, usually red wigglers.

This project will hopefully be finished by the end of the semester.

If you are interested in getting involved with this project just fill out this form!

Questions & Answers from IIT Facilities

On Monday 10/15, ESW welcomed IIT Facilities to answer your questions about IIT and sustainability. Thank you to facilities for coming as well as you all for submitting your questions. See a list of them below:

Q: What happened to the B-Cycles (rent-able cycles) on campus?
A: B-Cycles were removed to bring in a new company that is also installing such stations all around the entire city. This will make using the cycles easier since students will have many more drop-off and pick-up locations all around the city.

Q: Does IIT Generate any of its own power?
A: In short, no. IIT does have solar panels but they don't contribute that much energy. IIT has gas turbines (the giant smokestack) but they are not in use because the operating costs are more than the cost of electricity that ComEd provides. IIT does purchase all of its energy from non-coal power solutions (i.e. nuclear, wind, solar...)

Q: How does recycling work at IIT? How much of the waste is actually recycled?
A: The waste in the red recycle/trash containers does get recycled, unless the recyclable waste is contaminated. Alot of the trash outside of the buildings cannot be recycled because it is overly contaminated with non recyclable products. Everything is sent off site by Waste Management.

Q: Does the compost machine next to MTCC work?
A: It does but it is not used right now. This is because the amount of food waste required to run it is not generated by the food consumption. While the total volume of waste might be enough, the composition is not right. The required waste has to be all organic, no plastics or wrappers and such.

Q: what is IIT doing about its paper use?
A: OCES has greatly reduced its paper use. We are asking other departments to also do the same. That is where we could use some help and improvement. The allotted paper fund for each student is been reduced to discourage unnecessary printing.
